Do not attempt to adjust your internet you are looking at an African spur-thigh tortoise. Now I am sure that you’re asking yourself what does the Camel Towing Company have to do with a tortoise. I’m so glad that you asked. There are a lot of possibilities available to you when you bring us out to your event or installation.
Of course when you bring us out it isn’t just an animal on display. Our professional animal handling staff members are chocked full of educational information. Nothing is better than interacting with an animal while you’re learning about them. For instance, the spur-thigh is the third largest tortoise in the world. It is smaller than the Galapagos and Aldabra tortoises. That said, this species can row to weigh up to 100 pounds.
Telling a Tortoise From A Turtle
Now a tortoise isn’t a turtle and if you’re trying to figure out which is which, you want to look at the feet. You’ll know you have a turtle by looking at webbed toes. Our friend pictured above has 4 scaly stumps for legs. They get to where they’re going just the same.
Another way for you to tell is the shape of the shell. A turtle will have more of a hydro-dynamic shell. That means it will be a bit flatter than a tortoise who will have a bit more of a rounded shell. The bumps on a tortoises back are called scutes. The scutes are part of their skeleton so when you rub a tortoise they can actually feel it. This is just a small sample of the kind of information that CTC animal rides brings to your event when you partner up with us. For more information feel free to give us a call. We will see you all next week!
